Shipley Do-Nuts started in Houston in 1936 and nearly nine decades later remains a legend for its simple, perfect plain glazed doughnut. This Ella Boulevard outpost is widely regarded as the best of over 300 locations — each doughnut here is still fried to order, producing an airiness and warmth that factory production can't replicate. The Dallas Observer says 'Raise your kids right — raise them on Shipley's.' The apple fritters are 'the Rolex of doughnuts,' and the cake donuts have such a cult following that when one location slightly changed the shape, customers nearly rioted.
